Rangers head coach Sean Miller begins his 7th season at helm of the Northwest Area boys' basketball program in 2024-25. In his 7 seasons at the helm, Miller has led the Rangers to only one season of sub .500 basketball amassing double digit wins in all but one season.
In his first season in 2018-19, Miller led the Rangers to 15 wins, the most since 2007-2008, and a runner up finish in PIAA District 2 Class AA. The Rangers were led by duo 1,000-point scorers Sam Saxe and Jaxson Yaple as their season ended in Round 1 of the PIAA Class AA State Tournament. Miller's second season in 2019-20, saw production dip slightly with Northwest Area's only sub .500 season of his career and a first round district playoff exit, finishing their season at 7-16.
During the abbreviated season of 2020-21, Miller guided the Rangers to their first Mid-Penn Conference East Division Title, and their last year in PIAA District 2. The Rangers won their first district playoff game in two years on the road before ending their season at 11-11. Season #4 was another success as Miller and the Rangers won 17 games on their way to a second consecutive Mid-Penn Conference East Division title and a District 4 Class AA Semi-Final berth upsetting East Juniata in Round 1. The Rangers finished with a record of 17 wins and 8 losses led by senior, and 1st Team All-Conference Selection, Gary McLendon.
Seasons 5 (2022-23) and 6 (2023-24) saw the Rangers and Miller win 20+ games in back to back years for the first time in 20 years. 2022-23 saw the return of injured starters Tayler Yaple, 1st Team All-Conference, and Landon Hufford, Conference DPOY, as the Rangers made it again to the state tournament with a decisive win over South Williamsport in the 3rd Place game of the PIAA District 4 Playoffs while winning a 3rd straight division title in the process.
Last season, 2023-24, saw one of the most successful Ranger seasons in many years as the Rangers rattled off 20 straight wins after beginning the season 1-2. Miller led the Rangers to a 4th straight division title, tying him for 2nd all-time in Northwest Area history for division titles won, and their first overall league title by besting Muncy in the league championship. Junior Josh Miner, scored his 1,000 career point in a league game against Benton Area and was unanimously named Conference MVP, Miller's first player to accomplish the feat.
Miller owns a career record of 94-56 which is 4th most all-time at Northwest Area behind legendary Coach Eddie Gayeski (744 wins), Coach Irv Post (152 wins), and Coach Jerry Blazick (112 wins). Miller's career win percentage is .627 which is 3rd best all-time. Miller has had the pleasure of coaching 11 all-conference players and was named Conference Coach of the Year in 2022-2023.
Coach Miller resides in Dallas with his wife, Mary, and their children Kenny and Madeline.
